Activista Nigeria Press Statement on The Tragic Murder of Salome Eleojo Adaidu

Activista Nigeria expresses profound sorrow and outrage over the tragic murder of Salome Eleojo Adaidu, a young woman whose promising life was brutally cut short. Salome, a graduate of Library and Information Science from Kogi State University, was a symbol of resilience and hope, and her loss is a painful reminder of the persistent dangers faced by women and girls in our society.

Salome was raised in a family that valued accountability and community. Her family’s tradition of openness and strong interpersonal bonds ensured that all friends and acquaintances were introduced to the family. It is deeply troubling that neither her family nor her five siblings ever heard of or met the suspect, despite his claims. This underscores the senselessness of this heinous crime and the urgent need for measures to prevent such tragedies.

The circumstances surrounding her death are harrowing, with reports indicating a pattern of suspicious behavior by the suspect, who resided in Papalada, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. His lack of remorse, as reported, is alarming and indicative of a broader societal issue of impunity and disregard for human dignity.

This devastating loss reinforces the urgent need to create safe public and private spaces for women and girls. Women must feel secure in their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities. The normalization of violence, exploitation, and neglect of safety must end.

We call on authorities at all levels to prioritize:
1. Community Monitoring and Intervention: Strengthening neighborhood surveillance and fostering community collaboration to identify potential threats to safety.

2. Education and Awareness: Implementing nationwide campaigns to promote a culture of respect, consent, and accountability.

3. Legal and Policy Enforcement: Enforcing stricter laws to protect women and girls and ensuring swift justice for victims of violence.

4. Support Systems: Creating accessible shelters, counseling services, and hotlines for at-risk individuals.

As a society, we must confront the root causes of gender-based violence and work towards systemic reforms that prioritize the safety and dignity of all individuals. The loss of Salome must serve as a clarion call for action.

To Salome’s family and loved ones, we extend our deepest condolences. We stand with you in demanding justice for Salome and a Nigeria where women and girls can live without fear.

Together, we can create a society where every individual is valued, every life is protected, and no woman or girl feels unsafe.

In Solidarity
